Get ready to find out how cool chemistry really is — BYU is once again giving young students a chance to conduct their own captivating chemistry experiments at Open Lab Day!

The BYU chapter of the American Chemical Society, Y-Chem, will host the event. It began several years ago as an effort to help local students develop an interest in and curiosity about chemistry. Attendees will have the opportunity to conduct hands-on experiments involving multicolored flames, hydrogen-oxygen rockets and more. In addition to carrying out their own experiments, students will be able to attend a chemistry magic show, savor some liquid nitrogen ice cream and tour a research lab.

Open Lab Day will be held on Saturday, May 6 from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at the BYU Ezra Taft Benson Building. Participants will need to wear long pants and closed-toed shoes for safety purposes. For more information, visit ychem.byu.edu. The event is free of charge and open to all local elementary, junior high and high school students.
