On July 10, 2018 at 3 p.m. Darin Davis, Vice President of University Mission at Baylor University, will present "A Conversation on Faith-Based Education." Schools like Baylor and BYU integrate faith into the learning experience. Davis will share his thoughts and expertise on how to more effectively combine the spiritual and secular.
Dr. Davis will be joined in the conversation by Dan Judd, Associate Dean of Religious Education, Hal Boyd, LDS Church Public Relations, and Jim Rasband, Vice President of Undergraduate Education of BYU.
Darin H. Davis (B.A., University of Texas; M.A., Baylor University; Ph.D., Saint Louis University) is vice president for university mission and director of the Institute for Faith and Learning (IFL). He holds a faculty appointment in the Honors Program and is affiliated faculty in the Department of Philosophy and Baylor’s George W. Truett Theological Seminary.
As vice president for university mission, Davis has helped to lead the Spiritual Life and Character Formation Task Force, a university-wide effort to encourage and deepen Baylor’s Christian mission. Several new initiatives have been launched, including two programs to foster character formation across the curriculum and the Baylor Young Scholars Program, an effort to mentor Baylor graduates who may one day serve as faculty and administrators in higher education. Dr. Davis also assists the provost’s office with faculty hiring.
As IFL’s director since 2008, Dr. Davis oversees the Institute’s numerous projects: the annual Baylor Symposium on Faith and Culture; various faculty and staff development efforts for the University, including Communio, an annual retreat for Baylor educators; programs for Baylor undergraduate and graduate students, including the Crane Scholars Program and Conyers Scholars Program; the Bill and Roberta Bailey Family Lecture in Christian Ethics; and an annual medical ethics lecture for area health care professionals.
Davis's scholarly research focuses on the history of moral philosophy, virtue ethics, and higher education. His articles have appeared in the American Catholic Philosophical Quarterly, Christian Reflection, International Journal of Christianity and Education, and The Southern Journal of Philosophy. He is the editor and co-author of Educating for Wisdom in the 21st Century (St. Augustine's Press, forthcoming). He was recognized with a Mortar Board Circle of Achievement Award in 2013.
Davis is also principal investigator of the "Soundings Project", a $1.5 million grant given to Baylor through Lilly Endowment's "Called to Lives of Meaning and Purpose" initiative.
An ordained Baptist minister, Dr. Davis is pastor of Blue Ridge Baptist Church in Falls County, Texas, a congregation founded in 1859. A native of Amarillo, Texas, he and his wife Brenda are the parents of three daughters.
