Former Energy Undersecretary to Deliver Izatt-Christensen Lecture on the Future of Energy

Energy is the lifeblood of modern societies. Technology improvements in harnessing and distributing power from oil, gas, wind, and sun have been impressive, but there is much more to be done. This presentation outlines the need for additional energy innovation and explores research that offers important opportunities for continued progress toward energy goals.

Dr. Franklin M. Orr of Stanford University will be delivering the 10th annual Izatt-Christensen Lecture on the topic of global-energy innovations. Orr will deliver his general lecture entitled “The Global Energy Transformation: Where Do We Stand?” on October 19, 11:00 a.m. in room 140 of the Joseph Smith Building. Dr. Orr has spent years on the leading edge of energy research and technology, culminating in his service as Under Secretary for Science and Education in the US Department of Energy from 2014 to 2017. While with the Department of Energy, Orr was the principal advisor to the Secretary of Energy on science and energy research, including clean-energy technologies. He oversaw the Offices of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy, Fossil Energy, Nuclear Energy, and Science and 13 of the 17 Department of Energy National Laboratories. Orr halso participated in and managed energy projects with Stanford, the Environmental Protection Agency, and Shell Development Company.
