Join the Neal A. Maxwell Institute for Religious Scholarship for its annual Neal A. Maxwell Lecture, featuring Jill Mulvay Derr, historian and scholar of Latter-day Saint women’s history.

Derr’s presentation is titled, “To Be a Saint or Not to Be: Eliza R. Snow and the Complexities of Consecration.”

Jill Mulvay Derr is a distinguished historian and author whose scholarship has significantly shaped the study of Latter-day Saint women’s history. A former senior research historian at the Church History Department and past director of the Joseph Fielding Smith Institute for Latter-day Saint History at BYU, Derr has devoted her career to uncovering and preserving the voices of women in the Restoration. She is best known for her work on Eliza R. Snow, including co-authoring the acclaimed biography Eliza R. Snow: The Complete Biography. Her research and writing reflect a deep commitment to faith, rigorous scholarship, and the power of historical memory. A beloved mentor and speaker, Derr continues to inspire students and scholars alike with her thoughtful insights and dedication to truth.

This annual lecture honors Elder Neal A. Maxwell’s legacy of faith and intellect by highlighting scholarship that deepens understanding of the restored gospel. The lecture will later be available on the Maxwell Institute’s YouTube channel.
