The Maxwell Institute is pleased to present a special sneak preview screening of the new film Jane and Emma, from Excel Entertainment. The screening will include a live panel discussion featuring the director, executive producer, and members of BYU’s Black Student Union. Seating is limited.
ABOUT THE FILM
Two women. One white. The other black. Society mandated they be enemies. The gospel of Jesus Christ required they be friends. On the eve of the death of Joseph Smith, his widow, Emma, is on the brink of destruction. In order to stand with her friend in her darkest hour, one woman, Jane Manning, will need to hear the voice of God once more. Can she hear His voice again? And if so, can she find the strength to abide it?
PANEL DISCUSSION
Chantelle Squires, Director
Squires is an Emmy Award winning producer. She produced and directed Reserved to Fight, a feature length documentary that received finishing funds from ITVS, and aired nationally on PBS. She has edited several feature films including, The Work and the Glory trilogy and Moving McAllister starring Jon Heder and Mila Kunis. She produced season three of The Generations Project for BYU Television, and was awarded an Emmy for the episode “Natalie”. She is the founder and owner of the production company, Mirrorlake Films, where for ten years she developed, produced and directed documentaries and non-scripted television content for BYUtv and the Missionary Department of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. She has directed music videos and a documentary for Deseret Book. She has a BA in Media Arts from Brigham Young University.
Sterling Van Wagenen, Executive Producer
Van Wagenen is the co-founder of the Sundance Film Festival in Park City, Utah, and, in association with Robert Redford, he was the founding executive director of the Sundance Institute. He has directed four feature films, and produced over fourteen documentaries, feature films and/or television series, including the Academy Award winning The Trip to Bountiful with Horton Foote. From 1999 to 2004, he served as Director of the School of Film and Digital Media at the University of Central Florida. He has served on the media arts panels at both the National Endowment for the Humanities and the National Endowment for the Arts, twice chairing the Arts and Television Panel at the NEA. He has worked as an executive producer for the Publishing Services Division of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, as well as in various positions at BYU Broadcasting. Currently, he is the Producer-in-Residence at the University of Utah, and a partner in Pearl Farm Entertainment, based in Los Angeles. Sterling is married to Marilee Jeppson, and they have six children and 20 grandchildren.
