Marianne Meets the Mormons: Representations of Mormonism in Nineteeth-Century France

In the nineteenth century, a fascination with The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints made “Mormons” a common figure in French journalism, art, and literature. The French, however, were less interested in accurate portrayals of this American religion than in using the idea of “Mormonism” to reframe their own cultural preoccupations.
