Allan C. Carlson is a scholar and Distinguished Visiting Professor of history at Hillsdale College in Michigan. He retired as the president of the Howard Center in 2015. In this capacity, he directed the Family in America Studies Center, served as the International Secretary of the World Congress of Families, and edited the Family in America newsletter. He is also a former president of the Rockford Institute. His research and writings have addressed the underlying causes of population decline, the effects of taxation and regulation on the size and well-being of the family, the negative effects of feminism on women’s roles in society, as well as historical efforts to implement a family wage in the U.S. He has written over thirteen books including The Natural Family, The Family in America, Third Ways, and Family Cycles: Strength, Decline, and Renewal in American Domestic Life, 1630-2000. He earned his B.A. from Augustana College in Illinois and his Ph.D. in Modern European History from Ohio State University. He is married to Betsy Carlson and they have four children.
