"A Provo Boy’s Journey: How One Dyed-in-the-wool Member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is Trying to Understand and Bridge Religious and Secular Divides"

Much contemporary dialog has focused on the "great divide" between the conservative/liberal and religious/secular points of view, which characterize countless disagreements in the United States and around the world. This polarized dialog reflects a trend that has created misunderstandings in many colleges and universities, including BYU. These misunderstandings are likely to continue as individuals struggle or refuse to discuss issues which appear to separate persons largely along conservative/liberal and religious/secular lines. This presentation will illustrate one individual’s experience with the divide and how trying to gain understanding has blessed him in his personal, professional, and spiritual life.

Steve Smith is the director of BYU's Counseling and Career Center. Prior to coming to BYU, Steve worked at counseling centers at the University of Minnesota and University of Utah. When not at work, Steve can be found exploring the canyons and trails of Southern Utah with his family. He also serves as the bishop of the Provo YSA 219 ward. Steve and his wife Klyss have three children and five grandchildren. His greatest accomplishment is that he can still make Klyss laugh after 39 years of marriage.
