Understanding Syria through Refugees’ Stories

Wednesday, October 16
12:00 PM - 1:00 PM
238 HRCB

Since 2011, Syrians have faced a series of walls: authoritarianism that made protest unthinkable, repression determined to quash protest once it began, transformation of a popular uprising into war, and the forced migration of more than half the population. How have people “bridged” these experiences and, in turn, been transformed by them? These questions will be explored by sharing from interviews conducted with more than 400 displaced Syrians across the Middle East and Europe since 2012.

Wendy Pearlman, an associate professor of political science at Northwestern University, specializes in Middle East politics. Pearlman is the author of four books, including We Crossed A Bridge and It Trembled: Voices from Syria.
