You Can’t Get There from Here: The Unfinished Pan-American Highway

The Pan-American Highway served as the preeminent symbol of Pan-American cooperation in the twentieth century. Yet despite billions spent during some seventy-five years, the road remains incomplete. While the road’s boosters promised international harmony and national prosperity, road building's legacy, in these and other areas, remains ambivalent.

Shawn Miller is a professor of history at BYU and specializes in the environmental history of Brazil and Latin America. Miller is the author of numerous studies, including An Environmental History of Latin America (Cambridge 2007).
