Shining Path and Its Consequences in Ayacucho, Peru

Hear Dr. Antonio Jeri Chávez talk about the challenges faced by the region of Ayacucho as it has tried to recover from the ravages of the Shining Path terrorist group that operated in the area from the 1970s to 1990s. Dr. Jeri was at the university when the violence began, and he has been a part of attempts to recover after years of civil war as well as economic, political, and social disruption.

This lecture will be delivered in Spanish.

Dr. Antonio Jeri Chávez is the president of the National University of San Cristobal de Huamanga, in Ayacucho, Peru. Dr. Jeri Chávez has a Ph.D. in Environmental Science and Sustainable Development (among other degrees), and his research and teaching are in the areas of ecophysiology and plant health, sustainable agricultural development, beekeeping, cochineal production, pest control, and crop management.
