Dmitry Muratov, 2021 Nobel Peace Prize Winner

Friday, February 24
3:00 PM - 4:00 PM
Reynolds Auditorium HBLL 1060

Come hear the 2021 Nobel Peace Prize winner speak on "The Role of a Free Media in Building a Civil Society: The Case of Russia" on the anniversary of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

The role of the media in Russia has been highly contentious in recent years, especially after the Russian invasion of Ukraine. What role does the Russian media play in shaping understandings of Russian communities and foreign affairs? How does the availability and professionalism of different media affect interpretations of the Russian conflict with Ukraine?

Dmitry Muratov won the 2021 Nobel Prize for Peace. He was cited for his “efforts to safeguard freedom of expression.” He is a Russian journalist and editor-in-chief of the newspaper Novaya Gazeta. He served as a war correspondent in Chechnya and received the International Press Freedom Award in 2007. He is a vocal advocate for an independent press and known for investigating abuses of power.

This lecture is co-sponsored by the Kennedy Center for International Studies, the BYU Department of German and Russian, the BYU School of Communications, and BYU European Studies.

Part of the Kennedy Center's Winter 2023 lecture series, "Building a Civil Society."
