To Fight or To Bargain? Ukrainian Public Opinion on Prospects for Peace

Since the Russian invasion of Ukraine, there has been extensive discussion of the international impacts of the war in the United States and Europe. But how do Ukrainians feel about the war with Russia? This talk will discuss the evolution of Ukrainian attitudes about risk, negotiations, and how the war will end. While Ukrainians are rightly seen as unified, their views about conducting and ending the war differ based on their personal experiences during the war.

Celeste Beesley is an associate professor of political science at BYU. Her research focuses on international relations and political economy, particularly in the post-Soviet region. She has been studying public opinion in Ukraine since 2010.
