Hear how Native Hawaiian surfers resisted colonial encroachment by reclaiming waves and beaches from the professional surfing industry as well as from foreign surfers.

Dr. Isaiah Helekunihi Walker is a professor of history and the Academic Vice President of Brigham Young University–Hawai’i. A native of Hawai’i and an accomplished surfer, he is the author of the book Waves of Resistance: Surfing and History in Twentieth-Century Hawai’i, and is frequently featured in surfing documentaries such as Waterman: The Life and Times of Duke Kahanamoku.
