The Dance Construction Company was founded by Maida Withers in 1974 in Washington, DC. It mixes dance and performance with technology and media to create thought-provoking works for stage, site, and video in a collaborative process with artists, scientists and others committed to a process of experimentation. The work is deeply immersive, human, bold, and moving—characterized by stimulating ideas and technological innovation. This presentation will highlight fifty years of dance works breaking boundaries between audience and performers, approaching social, political, and life issues while deconstructing the artist’s role in a changing world.
Maida Rust Withers was born in Kanab, Utah and holds degrees in Dance from Brigham Young University and the University of Utah. She is Professor of Dance at George Washington University, where she has received many prestigious awards. She is a performer, choreographer, film maker, and scholar, known internationally for groundbreaking experiments in dance, and engagement with social, political, and cultural issues. Her extensive career has been recently honored at the Corcoran Gallery in Washington, D.C., with the exhibition Legacy: 50 Years of Dance on the Edge.
