Why is everyone so mad about women’s soccer? Dr. Brenda Elsey will join us to discuss the roots of women’s soccer in Latin America, the struggles of players, and the exciting solidarities that have emerged across the sport. We will reflect upon feminism, sexuality, and gender roles through a deep dive into the region’s favorite pastime.

Dr. Brenda Elsey is a professor of history at Hofstra University. She studies the history of sports, gender, popular culture, and politics in twentieth-century Latin America. She has authored and co-authored numerous books and articles, including Futbolera: A History of Women and Sports in Latin America as well as Citizens and Sportsmen: Fútbol and Politics in Twentieth Century Chile.
